Accessibility Boutiques

Accessibility boutiques are workshops presented by our access technology experts that provide introductions to accessibility best practices and the latest trends in access tech.

The accessibility boutiques are offered by the National Federation of the Blind at no cost to Maryland citizens with support from the state of Maryland through the Nonvisual Accessibility Initiative grant administered by the Maryland Department of Disabilities.

Strategies to Make STEM Accessible

November 19, 2019
Zoom Teleconference
8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. ET

Professions in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are quickly among the top fields in the United States for income potential, and with the blind population already at a disadvantage in employment opportunities, lack of adequate education in STEM topics only serves to broaden this disparity.

Join us to learn some of the most effective strategies and technologies available to address the specific challenges faced by blind students in STEM-related classwork.

Attendees will be exposed to

  • Low-tech, low-cost solutions to help make graphics tactilely readable
  • Modifications to mainstream graphing calculators
  • Software that can “sonify” graphs and other forms of data presentation

With some basic training on the nonvisual alternatives available to blind students, learning environments can be improved to allow blind students to perform at or above the level of their sighted peers.

This boutique will be held using Zoom teleconference software. You will receive a Zoom meeting link when you sign up for the event.
