Teen Empowerment Academy

June 15 –August 9, 2008

We have done it again! The National Federation of the Blind is excited to roll out the next installment of programming dedicated to creating a future full of endless opportunities for blind teens--the NFB Teen Empowerment Academy! Located at the NFB headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland, the NFB Teen Empowerment Academy is an eight-week residential training program offering blind and low vision teens an opportunity to build new skills, to increase confidence and to gain valuable work experience. Under the guidance of highly capable blind counselors and instructors, students will participate in various activities encouraging independence, reflecting high expectations, and shattering misconceptions by demonstrating the true capabilities of blind teens.

This program will…

  • Provide nonvisual instruction on critical blindness techniques including Braille, assistive technology, mobility, and daily living skills.
  • Launch students into the working world by involving them in a paid work experience.
  • Assist students in developing a proactive attitude towards blindness.
  • Expose students to countless blind role models by taking them to the week-long convention of the NFB in Dallas, Texas.
  • Discuss blindness-related issues including going to college, making friends, getting involved with the community, etc.
  • Engage the students in many outdoor recreational challenge activities.
