The efforts of the National Federation of the Blind to ensure the continued safety and independence of blind pedestrians continued to progress on several fronts this week. On Tuesday, members of the National Federation of the Blind of Maryland testified at a hearing of the Judicial Proceedings Committee of the state Senate to support a bill that would establish a state task force to consider a minimum sound standard for all new vehicles sold in Maryland. Cnet published a comprehensive article about the hearing and the issue of silent cars. Yesterday, NFB President Dr. Marc Maurer testified before the Working Party on Noise of the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations in Geneva, Switzerland. This body is part of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. VNB will continue to keep readers informed about this critically important issue.
