What:

The 2009 Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar commemorates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Louis Braille, inventor of the Braille system.  The obverse of this coin features a portrait of Louis Braille. The reverse shows a child reading a book in Braille with the word “Braille” (abbreviated BRL in Braille code) above him. The word "Independence" is featured on a bookshelf behind the child.

Why:

Did you know...

...that in America today only 10% of blind children are being taught to read Braille in school?

...that some blind students are graduating from high school without the ability to read or write?

... that the 70% unemployment rate among the blind has been directly linked to inadequate Braille education?

Did you know that you have the power to change these statistics?

Your purchase of the U.S. Mint's 2009 Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar will advance the National Federation of the Blind's efforts to end the Braille Literacy crisis in America.  The purchase of each coin is an investment in the education of blind children everywhere, and that is an investment with a return that cannot be matched.

The blind deserve the right to compete in society on a fair and equal basis, and that begins with a proper education.
