VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR STUDY

Research centers participating in the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) are looking for volunteers, people who have a family history of diabetes, are overweight, or have had gestational diabetes (GDM) when pregnant. These individuals will be screened for IGT, impaired glucose tolerance. There will be no charge. As approximately 50% of individuals who exhibit IGT go on to develop type II diabetes, research is underway to see if their disease progression can be halted by appropriate measures, such as diet, exercise, and medication.

Many people with IGT are unaware they have the condition, but Asian, African, Hispanic or Native American ethnicity confer risk, as do family history, obesity, or history of GDM. The elderly are also at increased risk for IGT.

The Diabetes Prevention Program is currently underway in 25 medical centers throughout the country. It should ultimately involve 4000 volunteers -- the largest diabetes prevention study ever undertaken in the United States.

Screening for the Diabetes Prevention Program is free. Interested individuals should call, toll-free, 1-888-377-5646 for more information.
